Texas Lawyer Cites Vioxx Verdict in Selection

Texas Lawyer newspaper named W. Mark Lanier, founder of The Lanier Law Firm, as the newspaper's 2005 Impact Player of the Year.
In a December 19 article titled "God, Family & Pharmaceuticals," the newspaper extolled Lanier's rise in the Texas legal profession, his unique background, and the impact of last August's $253 million verdict he won against Merck & Co., the manufacturer of VIOXX.
"The verdict rocked Wall Street and raised public awareness about allegations of drug company deception and U.S. Food and Drug Administration ineptness," the newspaper wrote. "Daily press accounts of the trial vaulted the 45-year-old Lanier into national prominence."
Other "Impact Players" for 2005 included the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, Tom DeLay counsel Dick DeGuerin, and "The Angry Client."
