Although many dangerous drugs have been taken off the market over the years, including Vioxx, Phen-Fen and others, big pharmaceutical companies continue to target patients with harmful medications. This time, the drug company is Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and the drug is an antibiotic named Levaquin, which has become the focus of health care regulators, doctors and patients from across the country.

Levaquin typically is prescribed for the treatment of bronchitis, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and respiratory bacterial infections like pneumonia.

However, Levaquin also brings horrible side effects, which caused FDA to order a “Black Box” warning on every Levaquin prescription beginning in July 2008.  “Black Box” warnings are ordered by the FDA only in cases where a drug poses significant risk of serious adverse of side effects.

Patients from around the country are reporting that Levaquin is causing unexplained ruptures of one or both Achilles tendons in addition to cases of unexplained tendinitis. These ruptures can be so destructive that surgical repair is hopeless.
