Mark Lanier Talks Data Breaches and Protecting Your Data

We live in an exciting age, but we live in a dangerous age. It’s exciting because you can access so much off of the internet, but that’s where a danger lies as well. One of those dangers is your private information being accessed by malicious people, people who would love to figure out how to infiltrate some company that has your private information and then sell that information on what’s called the dark web. It puts all of us in a vulnerable position. And those companies who exist on a really large level. I’m talking about companies that major in trafficking data and information. Those companies need to take the reasonable steps to make sure that your personal information is protected and not accessible to someone who can break in through the internet. This is a form of data protection, protecting the data about you. All too often, we just think of a computer as our computer, but computers are all connected around the world. And it should drive those companies that maneuver in that space to be reasonably careful with your credit cards, your social security number, your identification factors, those things that would give them access to your life and your treasures in ways they should not have access. There are times you’ll read in the papers or on the internet about companies who have been breached. That means that someone has gotten in and accessed data. We have been charged with pursuing those cases. Courts have asked us to lead that charge. It’s something that, we’re honored to represent people in trying to make sure every large company secures and locks down your private data in a reasonable and responsible way.
