Suing Roblox and Discord: Forcing Real Safety Reforms on Behalf of the State of Arkansas

Video transcript:

For our Roblox litigation, we just filed a lawsuit on behalf of the state of Arkansas. We’ve actually sued Roblox and Discord.

Roblox is a game that says it’s the number one game for kids, and yet there are more adults on Roblox than there are adults in the state of California. And parents don’t know that. And there are almost no age verification requirements.

And so, basically, what Roblox has done is they’ve kind of given an open door for sexual predators and predators to say, “Hey, there are kids inside.”

We started our complaint by saying that predators used to need candy or a van or even a cute little puppy. And now they don’t. Roblox basically just hands them a virtual playground with a sign that says, “Kids inside.”

And then what they do is Discord, which is a messaging app, allows sexual predators and users to be on Roblox, on this game where the, you know, average user is usually under 13, sometimes as young as five or six, to take them off of Roblox and into a private messaging app where they can exploit them for sexual pictures and meetups and things of that sort.

The more you dig into what is going on on Roblox and what is not going on, age verification, they have adults and sexual predators that are using voice modulators to sound like kids, that are creating avatars and fake profiles to look like kids.

And when the CEO of Roblox was asked about sexual predators on his platform, he said, “It’s an opportunity.”

And so they really just haven’t taken the age verification seriously. And the hope is, through this lawsuit with the state of Arkansas, that changes will actually take place.
