No state has a higher mesothelioma mortality rate than Maine, with roughly 17 deaths per million residents every year. Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Waldo, and Washington counties were among the 50 counties in the U.S. with the highest rates of death between 2000 and 2009 attributed to the rare and aggressive cancer.
Between 1999 and 2015, 381 Maine residents lost their lives because of mesothelioma, many of them exposed to asbestos while working at plants, shipyards, or military bases.

Brunswick Naval Air Station
Brunswick Naval Air Station was added to the EPA’s Superfund National Priorities List in 1987. It was severely contaminated with asbestos-containing products and other substances, such as PFAS chemicals. Construction materials and insulation containing asbestos were widely used on the base before it was closed in May 2011.
Efforts to clean up contamination in nearby soil and groundwater are still ongoing.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
Established in 1800 and still operating today, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has a long history of building and repairing submarines and other vessels. However, it has also been used as a storage and disposal site for hazardous waste, some of which has contaminated the nearby Piscataqua River. The shipyard was added to the National Priorities List as a Superfund Site in 1994, and cleanup efforts are still ongoing.
The shipyard is also a known source of extensive asbestos exposure for workers, as the mineral was used widely in constructing the shipyard itself and in the ships and vessels it built, repaired, maintained, and updated.
Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure
Maine has been home to many shipyards, paper mills, and military bases throughout its history, all of which have been associated with asbestos use. Common occupations in Maine with the highest risk of asbestos exposure include the following:
Maine’s shipbuilding industry widely used asbestos because of its heat-resistant properties, including it in components like boilers and pipes. Those building, repairing, or deconstructing ships may have come in contact with asbestos-containing products.
Facilities like the Yankee Nuclear Power Plant and Central Maine Power Plant used asbestos-containing materials in turbines, generators, and other equipment that generated heat. Employees who worked on such equipment may have inhaled asbestos fibers dislodged during installation or maintenance.
Oxford Paper Company, Great Northern Paper Company, and Georgia Pacific Paper Mill are all known asbestos exposure sites. The insulation in high-temperature equipment used in the paper production process contained asbestos. Thus, mill workers and others were frequently exposed to asbestos.
Those serving, working, or living at military bases like the Brunswick Naval Air Station and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard likely encountered asbestos-containing materials in numerous uses. Asbestos insulation was a key component in base buildings and was widely used in the maintenance, construction, and operation of ships and vehicles, exposing both veterans and civilians.

Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma Compensation in Maine
After being diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness, Maine residents have several options for pursuing compensation. Asbestos exposure victims can file a mesothelioma lawsuit against those responsible for their illnesses to seek damages related to their injuries. If the victim has died from their illness, their family can pursue damages through a wrongful death suit.
Compensation might also be available through an asbestos trust fund claim. Many asbestos product manufacturers have filed for bankruptcy to shield themselves from asbestos exposure liability. Courts ordered them to establish trust funds to compensate exposure victims. Filing a claim with a trust is usually simpler and faster than pursuing a mesothelioma lawsuit.
Military veterans can also file a claim for benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs if they were sickened by asbestos exposure during their service. VA benefits include medical care and monthly compensation.
Asbestos Laws and Regulations in Maine
Maine’s statute of limitations for mesothelioma claims is much friendlier than many other states, giving individuals six years to file a claim after their diagnosis.
Maine courts have a history of awarding significant compensation to asbestos exposure victims. However, the state has specific requirements for proving causation between a mesothelioma diagnosis and exposure to specific asbestos-containing products. Our experienced Maine mesothelioma attorneys can help you navigate the state’s evidentiary rules and secure fair compensation.
