For decades, hardworking Arizonans were exposed to asbestos on the job in industries like construction, mining, manufacturing, and military service. The material was widely used in a multitude of products and applications throughout the 20th Century, and Arizona has 103 known naturally occurring asbestos deposits.

Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma. Widespread exposure to the mineral has sickened countless Arizonans. Between 1999 and 2017, 5,175 Arizonians have lost their lives to this aggressive cancer.

Arizona is also home to many veterans, one of the most at-risk groups. Many service members encountered asbestos without warning of the danger. Today, mesothelioma victims and their families deserve justice, and that’s where The Lanier Law Firm comes in.

Arizona’s Asbestos Superfund Sites

Arizona is home to several asbestos-contaminated sites, which required extensive remediation efforts under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund Program.

Mountain View Mobile Home Estates

One such site is the Mountain View Mobile Home Estates in Maricopa County, which sits on land previously occupied by Metate Asbestos Corporation Mills. A residential community was built on the grounds in 1973.

The Metate asbestos-processing facility had been shut down for failing to meet air quality standards. Instead of properly removing hazardous materials, the property owners covered the contaminated soil and left behind asbestos-containing equipment. Unaware of the danger, residents moved in and were exposed to asbestos fibers that lingered in the environment. The EPA added Mountain View to the Superfund list in 1982, initiating a cleanup that was completed in 1988.

Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

Another significant asbestos-contaminated site is the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. This military installation was added to the Superfund list in 1990 after environmental testing revealed groundwater contaminated with hazardous pollutants. Like many older military bases, asbestos was widely used in construction, insulation, and aircraft maintenance, putting service members and civilian workers at risk of exposure. Although cleanup efforts have begun, the site remains under ongoing monitoring and maintenance to manage contamination risks.

Occupations at Risk for Asbestos Exposure

Copper Smelting Workers

As the leading copper producer in the U.S. for many years, Arizona was home to large-scale copper smelting operations, where asbestos was widely used in equipment and facilities due to its heat-resistant properties. Notable sites where asbestos exposure likely occurred include:

  • American Smelting & Refining Company
  • Inspiration Consolidated Copper
  • Kennecott Copper Corporation
  • Phelps Dodge
Miners

Arizona was a major hub for asbestos mining, with the Salt River Canyon Mine becoming one of the largest deposits in the country. Johns-Manville also operated mines in Central Arizona, exposing workers to airborne asbestos fibers and increasing their risk of mesothelioma. Notable mining sites include:

  • Salt River Canyon Mine
  • Johns-Manville Operations
Military Personnel

Military personnel stationed at Arizona bases were frequently exposed to asbestos, which was commonly used in barracks, ships, aircraft, and vehicle insulation. Asbestos-containing materials were used in construction, maintenance, and repairs, placing service members at risk of inhaling dangerous fibers. Notable military sites with a history of asbestos use include:

  • Luke Air Force Base
  • Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

Options for Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Compensation in Arizona

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure, there are several ways to seek compensation in Arizona.

The primary way for victims to seek compensation for mesothelioma is by filing a lawsuit against the companies responsible for their asbestos exposure. A successful claim can provide financial relief for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages.

On average, mesothelioma lawsuits settle for between $1 million and $1.4 million, but settlements can range from $1 million to $11.4 million, depending on whether the case settles or goes to trial.

Most mesothelioma lawsuits result in settlements, allowing victims to receive compensation without going to court.

Many asbestos companies filed for bankruptcy to shield themselves from mounting liability. The courts required them to establish asbestos trust funds to compensate victims. An estimated $30 billion is still available in these trust funds. Trust fund claims offer a faster and simpler way to obtain financial support and do not require a court appearance. Johns-Manville and Raybestos-Manhattan are two companies with active trust funds.

Veterans exposed to asbestos during military service may qualify for VA disability benefits. Mesothelioma has a 100 percent VA disability rating, allowing veterans to receive over $3,800 in monthly compensation, along with free medical care. Our Arizona mesothelioma attorneys can help you prepare your VA claim, ensuring you receive the benefits you are entitled to.

Asbestos Laws and Regulations in Arizona

Arizona’s Revised Statutes § 12-542 specifies that a person must file a lawsuit within two years from the date of injury. Similarly, families pursuing a wrongful death claim have two years from the date of their loved one’s passing to take legal action.

Whether you are pursuing justice for yourself or a loved one, it is crucial to consult with an experienced Arizona mesothelioma attorney as soon as possible to ensure your rights are protected and that you meet all necessary deadlines for filing your claim.
