The U.S. Senate has approved the 21st annual resolution recognizing National Asbestos Awareness Week, observed from April 1 through April 7, 2026. Led by Jeff Merkley and Steve Daines, the bipartisan measure underscores the continued dangers of asbestos exposure, a known carcinogen still impacting public health across the country. The resolution also calls on the U.S. Surgeon General to issue a formal warning to increase awareness and prevention efforts.

This national designation serves as the basis for Global Asbestos Awareness Week, an international initiative organized by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization to promote education, advocacy, and action aimed at eliminating asbestos-related diseases worldwide.

Attorneys Weigh in on the Importance of National Asbestos Awareness Week

The asbestos and mesothelioma attorneys at The Lanier Law Firm say the Senate’s resolution reflects a continued need to confront the lasting impact of asbestos exposure and to prioritize prevention alongside accountability.

“This resolution underscores a troubling reality we see in our cases time and again: the long delay between asbestos exposure and diagnosis. When symptoms can take decades to emerge, victims face the daunting task of tracing their exposure back to its source — often to products that companies knew were dangerous long before anyone got sick. That’s why awareness and proper documentation are so critical.”

Maura Kolb

“One of the most important points in this resolution is that asbestos exposure is still happening. Even though use has declined, it has not been eliminated, and that continued presence in certain products and older structures creates an ongoing risk that people may not fully understand.”

Manny Cabrera

“One of the things this resolution does is call attention to communities like Libby, Montana, where the effects of asbestos exposure have been felt for decades. In working with families affected by exposure tied to the Libby mine, we’ve seen how widespread that impact can be. And because diseases like mesothelioma can take decades to develop and are associated with a very limited life expectancy, it really highlights why continued awareness and prevention are so important.”

Darron E. Berquist

“This resolution also highlights the occupational component of asbestos exposure, particularly among workers in industrial settings, shipyards, and older facilities. Those environments have historically created significant risk, and in many cases, the individuals affected were never adequately warned.”

James Campbell

“What stands out is the emphasis on early detection and public education. While treatment options remain limited, identifying disease earlier can make a difference, and increasing awareness helps ensure that people understand both the risks and the importance of minimizing exposure wherever it still exists.”
