Daniel Bedell is an associate in the Lanier Law Firm’s Palo Alto office. Mr. Bedell brings a unique combination of technical, patent and litigation skills to his practice in high-stakes intellectual property disputes. Mr. Bedell’s cases have involved a wide rage of complex technologies including wireless communications, semiconductor fabrication, data storage, chemical processes, computer hardware and software, video game systems, and medical devices.
 
Mr. Bedell earned his law degree cum laude from the Santa Clara School of Law, where he was a Dean’s Fellow. Prior to law school, he earned a degree in chemical engineering cum laude from Brigham Young University.
 
Before practicing law, Mr. Bedell spent seven years as a lithography engineer at IBM and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, where he developed designs and processes for next-generation microelectronics and thin-film disk drive heads. Mr. Bedell is an inventor on multiple patents and has patent applications in the area of thin-film head design and manufacturing.
 
Mr. Bedell is active in several legal associations including the Intellectual Property Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice and Bay Area IP Inn of Court. 
 
Mr. Bedell’s current matters include: 
 
  • Motiva v. Nintendo, (E.D. Tex.; W.D. Wash.; ITC): representing technology start-up Motiva in an ITC case against video game giant Nintendo, for patent infringement by the Wii; and
  • InNova v. 3Com, et. al., (E.D. Tex.): representing technology start-up InNova against 36 major corporations for patent infringement involving email spam filtering technology. 
 
Mr. Bedell’s prior matters include: 
 
  • Prust v. Apple, (E.D. Tex.; N.D. Cal.): successfully represented a computer scientist in a patent-infringement suit against Apple involving cloud-computing technology; 
  • Chirife v. St. Jude Medical, (E.D. Tex.): successfully represented a medical doctor/inventor alleging patent-infringement, copyright-infringement, fraud, trade secret theft, breach of contract and unjust enrichment against St. Jude Medical, a for-profit corporation and one of the world's largest medical device manufacturers; 
  • 800 Adept v. AT&T, et. al., (E.D. Tex.): obtained settlement on behalf of a small, innovative provider of telephone routing technologies, in patent litigation against the four largest wireless-communications companies in the United States; 
  • Stormedia Texas, LLC. v. CompUSA, Inc., (E.D. Tex.): litigation counsel to one of the nation’s largest technology companies in a patent-infringement matter involving coatings for disk drives; and 
  • Damon v. Peak Funding, Inc., (Ca. State) successfully represented pro bono the victim of a predatory lending scheme involving several of the largest mortgage companies in California.
