What Occupations Are at Risk of Asbestos Exposure in New Jersey?
New Jerseyans are still suffering the effects of historical asbestos use today. Asbestos was used in many commercial, public, and residential buildings until as late as the 1990s, and people who use or work in these buildings can still be exposed today. Occupations associated with asbestos exposure in New Jersey include:
New Jersey's Manufacturing Workers
New Jersey factory workers have been exposed to asbestos in machinery, conveyor belts, electrical wiring, and building materials. The Johns-Manville asbestos factory, opened in 1912, was one of the most prolific asbestos exposure sites in the entire state.
Workers in New Jersey's Chemical Industry
New Jersey’s chemical industry featured many major facilities, including DuPont, Toms River Chemical Corporation, Tennaco Chemical Company, Heyden Chemical Corporation, and Mutual Chemical Company of America. Brown amosite and blue crocidolite—two forms of asbestos—were extensively used in chemical production.
Plastic Workers
Plastic companies were common in New Jersey, and asbestos was used in some plastic production processes. Celanese Plastics, Union Plastics Corp., C.M. Plastics Moulding Co., and Wheaton Plastics Co. are among those that used asbestos.
Worker Exposure in New Jersey's Shipyards
Shipyards were one of the most significant sources of asbestos exposure throughout the 1900s. The Camden Shipyard was the largest and most prolific shipyard in the world during World War II, producing a variety of vessels for the U.S. Navy. Shipyard workers who built, repaired, or maintained these ships experienced even heavier exposure because they directly handled large amounts of asbestos.
Oil Workers in New Jersey
Like other industries involving high temperatures, oil companies protected key equipment using asbestos for its heat-resistant properties. Halliburton, Hess Oil and Chemical, Mobile, Chevron, Standard Oil, Texaco, and Tosco are among the oil companies with histories of asbestos exposure in New Jersey.
Workers in New Jersey's Power Plants
New Jersey’s many power plants used asbestos to insulate turbines, generators, and other equipment from high temperatures. Sites like New Jersey Power and Light Company, Jersey Central Power and Light Company, Perth Amboy Powerhouse, and Powerhouse Essex Station were associated with plant workers’ asbestos exposure.
New Jersey' Construction Workers
Due to its strength and fire resistance, asbestos has been a common component in construction materials for decades. Johns-Mansville Products Corporation, Repauno Construction, National Gypsum Company, and Vespi Construction all used or sold asbestos-containing products.
Veterans in New Jersey's Military Bases
U.S. Military bases like McGuire Air Force Base and Military Ocean Terminal used asbestos in several functions. Those serving or working on these bases may have been exposed to asbestos particles in the air.
Schools built before 1980 often contain asbestos. Data compiled by the New Jersey Department of Health from 2008 to 2017 found damaged asbestos in 50 percent of the schools studied, with dangerous fibers released in 27 percent. According to the report, New Jersey schools were in “serious noncompliance” with federal regulations issued under the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.

What Compensation Is Available for Mesothelioma in New Jersey?
If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with this rare cancer, you may be able to receive substantial mesothelioma compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, and other losses.
In a mesothelioma lawsuit, you may be able to recover economic, non-economic, and punitive damages from the companies that produced and sold asbestos. Economic damages cover monetary losses, while non-economic damages compensate for intangible losses, such as pain and suffering. Unlike many other states, New Jersey imposes no limits on non-economic damages.
Punitive damages are available when you prove the defendant acted with malice or a willful and wanton disregard for your safety despite foreseeable harm. New Jersey allows punitive damages of up to $350,000 or five times your total economic and non-economic damages, whichever is greater.
Many asbestos manufacturers filed for bankruptcy protection to shield themselves from their vast asbestos-exposure liability. However, federal bankruptcy laws required them to establish asbestos trust funds to compensate victims. If a company responsible for your asbestos exposure has filed for bankruptcy protection, we can pursue an asbestos trust fund claim for you.
The following companies with New Jersey facilities have filed for bankruptcy and established asbestos trust funds:
If you were exposed to asbestos during military service, you may be eligible for VA mesothelioma benefits, which include free medical care and monthly disability compensation.
Compensation for the Death of a Loved One from Mesothelioma
If your loved one died of mesothelioma, you may be able to pursue compensation through a wrongful death lawsuit. Compensation in a wrongful death claim in New Jersey may include the following:
- Loss of financial support
- Your loved one’s pain and suffering
- Your loved one’s medical expenses
- Funeral and burial costs
New Jersey does not allow families to recover emotional damages in wrongful death claims. However, you can pursue damages for your loved one’s emotional anguish.
There are also other asbestos claims after death available to pursue compensation. Survivors can file asbestos trust fund claims with bankrupt companies that exposed a lost loved one to asbestos. You may also be able to file a VA claim for death benefits if your loved one was an eligible veteran exposed to asbestos in the military.
New Jersey Asbestos Laws and Regulations
Under New Jersey’s statute of limitations, you generally have two years from the date of your diagnosis or the date of your loved one’s death to file a mesothelioma lawsuit. If you miss the deadline, you will lose your right to pursue compensation.
The New Jersey Supreme Court has expanded the potential liability of companies in asbestos-exposure cases. It has ruled that equipment companies can be held responsible for asbestos contained in third-party replacement parts and that some individuals other than a worker’s spouse may be able to sue companies for secondary or “take-home” exposure. Our knowledgeable mesothelioma attorneys can help determine whether you have a viable case.
