Our Mesothelioma Settlements & Verdicts

Our $20 billion of mesothelioma settlements and verdicts include the following:

We are unafraid to take on the largest asbestos companies to help injured individuals recover the compensation they deserve. Our most notable verdicts and settlements are discussed below.

Missouri Verdict Against Johnson & Johnson

We won a historical $4.69 billion verdict against Johnson & Johnson in the first successful trial to link asbestos in baby powder to ovarian cancer. On appeal, the Missouri Supreme Court upheld the verdict and reduced the damages to $2.1 billion. Johnson & Johnson appealed all the way to the United States Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court declined the case, allowing the verdict to stand.

West Virginia Verdict Against John N. Crane, Inc.

We won a unanimous liability verdict in West Virginia against John N. Crane, Inc., an asbestos company that is known for its policy of taking all cases to trial rather than settling. We tried the case on behalf of a retired pipefitter who developed pleural mesothelioma after handling asbestos-laden gaskets for 41 years.

Alabama Verdict Against Carborundum Company

We won a 115.6 million verdict, including $100 million in punitive damages, against Carborundum Company for 21 steelworkers who contracted asbestosis after being exposed to asbestos through a grinding wheel. This was the first verdict against a grinding wheel manufacturer.

California Appellate Win

Our skilled California mesothelioma attorneys achieved a landmark appellate win against Shell Oil on behalf of a woman diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer from secondary exposure to asbestos through her husband’s work clothing. This important ruling established that employers and landowners may be held liable for harm that extends to a worker’s family as a result of asbestos exposure.

New Jersey Supreme Court Appellate Win

We won an appeal in the New Jersey Supreme Court regarding the extent of a manufacturer’s liability in asbestos product warnings. The ruling specifies that a manufacturer’s duty to warn about asbestos-related health hazards extends to products that require asbestos components to be replaced. This ruling benefits workers who replaced asbestos products prone to wear, such as gaskets.

Texas Appellate Win Overturning a Default Judgment

The asbestos manufacturer Owens-Illinois won a $1.6 billion default judgment against T&N, Ltd., one of the companies we previously sued on behalf of more than 1,600 asbestos exposure victims. If allowed to stand, T&N, Ltd., may have been forced into bankruptcy, which would have deprived our clients of their damages. We successfully appealed the default judgment and protected our clients’ claims.

Recommendations from Past Clients

A trusted mesothelioma law firm should have a large number of testimonials from clients it has represented. Below are just a few examples of the feedback our dedicated mesothelioma lawyers have received from former clients:

What To Look for To Get the Best Mesothelioma Law Firm for You

The law firm you choose will have a significant impact on your compensation. We understand the toll a mesothelioma diagnosis has on an individual and the family. We provide personalized attention, skilled representation, and assistance finding resources, including the best medical care.

When selecting a mesothelioma law firm, look for a law firm that has the following qualities:

A Nationwide Presence

Nationwide mesothelioma lawyers have more experience handling mesothelioma cases compared to most local law firms. Our skilled mesothelioma lawyers accept cases in all 50 states, and we have a national reputation for getting outstanding results.

When we won $115 million for the Alabama steel mill workers, our nationally recognized mesothelioma lawyers were successful in moving the venue to Texas because the statute of limitations in Alabama would not allow the case to be tried there. This is one example of how our nationwide presence benefits our clients.

Our national reputation means the largest asbestos product manufacturers know who we are, and most of them would rather settle than risk going against us at trial. This benefits our clients because it helps them recover compensation for mesothelioma sooner and avoid appearing in court.

“We handle asbestos cases all over the country. Wherever the client is, we will meet with them, and wherever their case needs to be filed is where we end up going, whether that’s California or New York or anywhere in between.”

Darron Berquist,
Managing Attorney of Asbestos Litigation, NYC

Experience with Asbestos Litigation

A law firm with experience handling asbestos exposure cases has a track record you can use to gauge the effectiveness of the law firm’s approach to these complex cases. Our mesothelioma attorneys have been standing up to asbestos companies for more than 30 years, and our $20 billion in recoveries testifies to our success.

Through the years, we have seen firsthand the lengths asbestos product manufacturers were willing to go to conceal the truth about asbestos for decades to protect their profits. Today, they go to just as much trouble to avoid paying legitimate victims of asbestos exposure their well-deserved compensation.

Our experience has taught us what it takes to hold these companies accountable and ensure they pay maximum compensation to the people they have harmed. We are familiar with their playbook, and our knowledge allows us to overcome their tactics and win you the compensation you deserve.

Care and Compassion

Your legal claim should provide a measure of relief rather than add to the financial and emotional burden associated with mesothelioma. Our compassionate mesothelioma lawyers understand how traumatic this disease is, and we are dedicated to providing every client with caring support and personalized attention.

We treat clients like family. You will never feel like you are just a case to us. Many of our clients and their families stay in touch with us long after their cases are resolved because of the close, personal relationships they had with our attorneys.

While winning a fair compensation is our top priority, we also provide assistance beyond your legal needs, including moral support, referrals to resources, and help finding quality medical care. We will even work with your doctors to lower your medical bills so more of your settlement stays in your pocket.

Creativity and Resourcefulness

Winning in court against wealthy companies requires a strong connection with juries. If your case goes to court, we will go to whatever lengths are necessary to help juries understand the culpability of asbestos product manufacturers and the extent of the harm our clients have suffered.

At times, this requires a measure of creativity that is rarely seen in legal settings. Our founder Mark Lanier is a master storyteller who is famous for his use of props in the courtroom, which helps juries understand his valuable arguments. Some of his recent use of props include the following:

  • A block of veined cheese to demonstrate how talc is mined and how asbestos cannot be fully separated from the talc
  • A bale of hay with a needle inside to demonstrate that being difficult to detect in testing does not mean asbestos is not there
  • A display of everyday products that contain asbestos to show members of juries that they, too, have likely been exposed to asbestos

Juries may not remember every argument made in complex asbestos exposure trials, but they do remember these simple demonstrations. This can have a powerful impact on a jury. Demonstrations like these were used to win the $4.6 billion verdict against Johnson & Johnson.

No Upfront Fees

The best mesothelioma law firms accept mesothelioma cases without any upfront costs to you. When you choose our mesothelioma law firm, you can count on us to provide the following:

  • A free, no-obligation consultation
  • No upfront legal fees
  • No financial obligations unless we win
  • Legal representation from top mesothelioma lawyers with zero risk to you

“At the Lanier Law Firm, we never charge a retainer fee or nor do we charge clients by the hour. Our fee structure is based on recoveries that we obtain for the client. The bottom line is if the client doesn’t get any funds or money from a settlement or trial, we don’t get paid either.”

Sam Taylor,
Managing Attorney of Asbestos Litigation, Houston

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to the questions we frequently receive about our mesothelioma law firm.

How Long Do I Have To Contact a Mesothelioma Law Firm After I've Been Diagnosed?

Every state sets each mesothelioma statute of limitations, for when a lawsuit must be filed. In most states, this deadline is one to three years after diagnosis, but there are exceptions.

If the deadline passes before you file, you forfeit your right to pursue the compensation you deserve. To protect your claim, don’t wait to hire a reputable mesothelioma law firm. Contact us today to get started.

Can I Hire a Law Firm for a Mesothelioma Case if My Loved One Already Passed Away?

You may be eligible to file an asbestos claim after death if your close family member has passed away from mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness. Every state sets its own rules on who can file a claim. In most states, you can file a claim if you are the surviving spouse, parent, child, or designated estate representative. We can determine your eligibility during your free, confidential consultation.

Can You Help Me Figure Out When and Where I Was Exposed to Asbestos?

One of the qualities that sets us apart is our extensive collection of asbestos products that helps our clients remember potential asbestos exposure sources. We will also obtain a detailed life history to determine how you were exposed to asbestos. Once we have this information, we can easily identify the responsible companies.

What Are the Different Types of Mesothelioma Lawsuits?

Mesothelioma lawsuits usually fall under two main categories that include personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death lawsuits. Asbestos trust fund claims can also be filed to secure recovery from companies that have declared bankruptcy and have established trust funds to compensate victims. Some mesothelioma cases could also fall under product liability. Consult with our talented mesothelioma lawyers to explore the best legal options for your case.

Do I Need To Hire a Mesothelioma Law Firm in Order To Take Legal Action?

Asbestos product manufacturers invest millions in their defense. Standing up to them requires access to resources most people do not have. Working with our trusted mesothelioma law firm gives you the opportunity to focus on your family and treatment without having to worry about the legal details.

What Are the Fees Associated With Hiring a Mesothelioma Lawyer?

There are no upfront costs or fees for hiring the Lanier Law Firm. Our mesothelioma attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, meaning you won’t owe us anything unless we win and recover compensation for you.

Will I Be Able To Speak with Members of Your Asbestos Law Firm As Needed?

We are dedicated to providing our clients with the highest level of service until your claim is resolved. You will always be able to reach your attorney when you need us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If we don’t answer when you call, we will return your call promptly.

What’s The Difference Between a Law Firm that Focuses on Asbestos Exposure Cases And One that Doesn’t?

Law firms that lack asbestos litigation experience do not have the detailed knowledge of the asbestos industry that you can expect from a seasoned mesothelioma law firm. Focusing on mesothelioma cases has allowed our law firm to gather asbestos product information, internal asbestos company memos, and proprietary information from private investigations.

We have knowledge of asbestos litigation laws in all 50 states and a nationwide network of medical experts and others who help us maximize your compensation. This is what enables us to identify all of the responsible parties, defeat their tactics, and maximize your compensation. Contact us today for a free case review.
