Asbestos Exposure in Baltimore, MD: Facts, Risks, and Known Sites

Our experienced Maryland mesothelioma lawyers are monitoring asbestos exposure in Baltimore and working to get justice for those affected. The immense human impact of asbestos exposure is still felt to this day, as the city saw 91 mesothelioma deaths between 2018 and 2024. Many of the 2,060 lung cancer deaths in that period may have also been caused by asbestos.

Industries and companies known to have exposed Baltimore workers and residents to asbestos include the following:

  • Shipyards and ports, including the Port of Baltimore, U.S. Coast Guard Yard, and Sparrows Point Shipyard
  • Steel mills, including Bethlehem Steel Corporation
  • Power plants and utility companies, such as Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.
  • Hospitals and schools with older buildings, including those on the University of Baltimore campus

Baltimore’s Shipyard Asbestos Exposure: What You Need to Know

Throughout much of the 20th century, asbestos was commonly used in the production, repair, and operation of ships and other seagoing vessels, helping to insulate and protect key components. Thus, shipyard workers and sailors were exposed to high levels of asbestos.

Baltimore has historically been a hotspot for shipbuilding in the U.S., with a Liberty Ship launching from the city’s shipyards roughly every 1.5 days during World War II.

A study of more than 4,000 former civilian workers at Baltimore’s Curtis Bay Coast Guard shipyard showed that the male subjects experienced significantly higher mortality rates for all causes of death, including a five times higher likelihood of death from mesothelioma. Cancer death rates were elevated even among those who weren’t identified as having been directly exposed to asbestos.

While asbestos use in shipyards mostly ended by the late 70s, servicemembers, laborers, and workers on older ships still faced a high risk of exposure to asbestos-containing components.

What Are the Compensation Options for Mesothelioma and Asbestos in Baltimore?

If you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you deserve justice and accountability from those responsible for your asbestos exposure. Our Baltimore mesothelioma attorneys can pursue full compensation for you through the following claims:

  • Mesothelioma lawsuits: Suing an asbestos company directly can allow you to recover significant compensation for your losses.
  • Asbestos trust fund claims: Many companies responsible for asbestos exposure have filed for bankruptcy protection and established asbestos trust funds to compensate victims. You may be eligible for quicker and easier compensation through a trust fund claim.
  • Asbestos claims after death: If your loved one has died from mesothelioma, we can help your family pursue asbestos claims for your losses.
  • VA mesothelioma claims: If you were exposed to asbestos during military service, you may be entitled to VA disability benefits.
  • Workers’ compensation claims: You can receive workers’ comp benefits from your employer if you were exposed to asbestos on the job.

What Is the Time Limit for Filing a Baltimore Mesothelioma Lawsuit?

Maryland’s statute of limitations for mesothelioma claims gives you three years after your diagnosis to file a lawsuit. Getting started on your claim immediately can help you build a stronger case and improve your chances of success while ensuring you file well within the legal deadline.
