How Were You Exposed to Asbestos in Springfield, Massachusetts?

You could have been exposed to asbestos by working in, living near, or visiting various older industrial, commercial, and residential properties throughout the city. Some older buildings known to have contained asbestos in Springfield include:

  • Chapman Valve: This is the former site of a manufacturing company that operated roughly from 1874 to 1959. Asbestos-containing insulation was found at the site in 1986, and a 2010 assessment found significant amounts of soil and construction debris contaminated with asbestos.
  • Former Willow Brook Foods: This 19th-century commercial and industrial building once housed a variety of businesses, including Willow Brook Foods, a trucking company, and a canned-food manufacturer. A 2008 survey identified potential asbestos-containing materials in its ceiling, insulation, floor tiles, and more.
  • Former Springfield YMCA facility: Construction companies were fined a combined $300,000 in 2025 for asbestos-handling violations at this site during abatement work, potentially exposing workers to asbestos as well as students, staff in a nearby classroom, and the general public.
  • Former Chestnut Street School: A 2013 inspection found asbestos-containing flooring, wiring, insulation, and other materials at this former middle school building.
  • Former Lincoln Hall: This building was once home to a drug store, apartments, a nail salon, and a church, among other occupants, between 1942 and 2008. According to a 2014 inspection report, asbestos was found in flooring, window caulking, and various debris piles at the site.
  • 43-45 Berkeley Street: This vacant and blighted house was declared structurally unsound and demolished in 2017. The entire building was treated as asbestos-contaminated waste after demolition, as its condition was too poor for a proper asbestos abatement.

This list does not include every site where asbestos exposure has potentially occurred in the city. Our knowledgeable Springfield mesothelioma lawyers can help you determine where your exposure may have occurred and build a strong case.
