Mesothelioma Facts and Asbestos Known Sites in Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia saw 291 mesothelioma deaths between 2018 and 2024. Our Pennsylvania mesothelioma lawyers continue to track the impacts of asbestos exposure in the city, focusing on helping victims and preventing future harm.

The clothing and textile industries, historically among the largest in Philadelphia, widely used asbestos at many facilities. Numerous other companies in Philadelphia have exposed workers to asbestos, such as railroads and power plants. For instance, workers at the Philadelphia Electric Company and the Philadelphia Gas Works were likely exposed to the material.

Naturally occurring asbestos has been discovered in parts of Pennsylvania, including Prince’s Soapstone Quarry along the Schuylkill River. Meanwhile, nearby Ambler was also home to a prominent asbestos dumping site where tainted waste was stored for decades.

Asbestos in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard

The Philadelphia Navy Yard is a 1,455-acre redeveloped complex on the former site of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and Philadelphia Naval Base.
After the Navy closed the shipyard and base in 1996, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Navy worked together to clean up various industrial contaminants, including asbestos, at the shipyard and naval base.

Due to the extensive use of asbestos materials for their heat resistance and durability, shipyard workers and Navy personnel were exposed to high levels while working at the site. Significant asbestos products used on ships include the following:

  • Insulation materials, including pipe wraps and wire coatings
  • Sealants and adhesives
  • Gaskets, boilers, and other components

Asbestos Exposure Risks in Philadelphia’s Schools: What You Need to Know

Asbestos-containing materials are still common in older buildings. The School District of Philadelphia has long struggled to properly handle and respond to asbestos, which has been found in most of the district’s 339 buildings.

In a 2023 settlement agreement with the city, the district committed to conducting semiannual inspections of each of its buildings and publicly reporting the results online. Meanwhile, in June 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced criminal charges against the district under a deferred prosecution agreement, alleging that it had failed to conduct legally required inspections of eight buildings before the 2023 settlement.

What Are the Compensation Options for Mesothelioma Victims in Philadelphia?

What Is the Time Limit for Filing a Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawsuit?

The Pennsylvania statute of limitations for filing a mesothelioma lawsuit is generally two years after the date you are diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness. Getting started on your claim immediately after your diagnosis will give you the best chance of securing a successful result and getting the compensation you deserve.
