How Were You Exposed to Asbestos in Minneapolis, MN?

Many industries widely used asbestos throughout much of the 20th century in Minneapolis. Thus, many companies operating in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas exposed workers and residents to the toxic material. There were 241 mesothelioma deaths between 2018 and 2024 in Hennepin County, showing the human cost of widespread exposure over time.

Companies in the area that have been linked to asbestos exposure include the following:

  • 3M Company, which had a facility in Minneapolis
  • Northern States Power, which is headquartered in Minneapolis
  • Burlington Northern Railroad, which had a facility in Minneapolis

Notably, Minneapolis was home to a facility, originally operated by Western Minerals and later by W.R. Grace, that processed vermiculite ore. The ore came from a mine in Libby, Montana, which was famously contaminated with high amounts of asbestos. The facility operated from 1938 to 1989 in a residential neighborhood. In a 2011 study, nearly 40% of participants reported playing on piles of rock waste outside the facility as children, and those who did were twice as likely to have developed asbestos-related lung abnormalities.

Minneapolis Veteran Asbestos Exposure: Minneapolis National Guard Armory

The U.S. military used asbestos in a variety of applications for decades, resulting in widespread exposure risks for veterans and staff. Members of the Minnesota National Guard, who serve as reserve forces for the Army and Air Force, may have been exposed to asbestos at certain facilities.

According to a 2010 appropriation request, Cedar Street Armory in St. Paul required asbestos abatement involving pipe insulation, floor tiling, and ceiling tiling at the facility. The Guard also requested $1 million in funding for safety improvements at facilities throughout the state, including addressing potential asbestos contamination.

What Are the Mesothelioma Compensation Options in Minneapolis?

If you have developed an illness from asbestos exposure in Minneapolis, you deserve justice for the wrong that’s been done to you. You may be eligible to pursue the following options for compensation:

How Long Do You Have to File a Minneapolis Asbestos Claim?

The statute of limitations for filing a mesothelioma lawsuit in Minnesota is generally four years from your diagnosis for product liability claims and six years for personal injury claims based on negligence. The deadline for filing a wrongful death claim is three years from the victim’s death.
